Default subscriptions
Default subscriptions are useful for new users. New users won't have any personal subscriptions at the start of their Intranet usage. Default subscriptions allow to get started with the Intranet right away.
Also, the macros look better when they are not empty - default subscriptions allow for a better first picture of your Intranet.
Configuration
Navigate to Confluence administration → Linchpin Enterprise News → Personal news subscriptions → Default subscriptions.
Switch to the Default subscriptions tab.
Click on the +Add space(s) button.
Enter a space within the available text field. Repeat for as many spaces as you wish.
Finally, click on the Save button. You're done!
If you don't intend to use personalization, it does not matter if you enter the spaces into one input field or use multiple input fields.
Default subscriptions affect only new users. Users who already have their own subscriptions will not be affected.
Spaces added as default subscriptions at a later point will also affect only new users.
Removing a space from default subscriptions will not remove the user's subscription.
Default subscriptions are not mandatory. Every user can unsubscribe from those spaces at any time.
If a user has no subscriptions at all, the default subscriptions will be applied again.
Obligatory subscriptions
Obligatory subscriptions can not be removed by a normal user.
Therefore the name - obligatory. A user will always see news from spaces rendered as obligatory.
Obligatory subscriptions are a great way to combine two use cases into one.
Most often, a typical dashboard consists of two news macros - the Cover Stories macro and the Personal News Feed macro. The Cover Stories often contain obligatory corporate news and are identical for every employee. The Personal News Feed macro on the other hand gives each user the freedom to select news sources they personally find interesting.
Obligatory subscriptions make it possible to combine both personal and corporate, obligatory news into one macro. You could, for example, set the Cover Stories macro to display the user's individual subscriptions, but with help of obligatory subscriptions, also include corporate news which will be displayed to every user, no matter their personal news configuration.
Configuration
Navigate to Confluence administration → Linchpin → Enterprise News → Personal news subscriptions → Obligatory subscriptions.
Within the Obligatory space subscriptions tab, you can define which spaces contain news which should be obligatory.
Enter spaces which contain obligatory news into the input field(s).
If you don't intend to use personalization, it does not matter if you enter the spaces into one input field or use multiple input fields.
Personalization
Personalization allows you to display obligatory and default news users, based on their profile data (for example: their department).
This solution makes it possible that User A and User B receive totally different obligatory/default news.
You need an active Linchpin Intranet Suite license for personalization to become available.
Configuration
Navigate to either
Confluence administration → Linchpin → Enterprise News → Personal news subscriptions → Default subscriptions → Personalization
or
Confluence administration → Linchpin → Enterprise News → Personal news subscriptions → Obligatory subscriptions → Personalization,
based on what kind of subscriptions you want to personalize.
The configuration process is identical for both options.
Select up to three profile field attributes which should be used for personalization.
Be aware that all selected profile fields will have to match the settings you made.
Click on the Save button.
Now, switch to the Default subscriptions / Obligatory subscriptions tab.
Enter the profile field values which should be used for personalization.
In the GIF below we selected the attributes Branch and Department to personalize our news. In this case, we need to enter both a branch (here: Frankfurt) and a department (here: IT). All users who match these criteria (are working within the IT department in Frankfurt) will receive news from the configured space(s).
Click on the Save button.
You can use wildcards and logical operators within the profile field value input fields.
If you, for example, personalized news based on the locale, you could enter de* as your profile field value. This allows to cover all German languages in the system, like de_DE or de_AT.
