Wikis have a high ROI.

It is almost impossible to perform an exact calculation of the ROI of a wiki. But the implementation has such low costs in comparison to its enormous advantages that it is practically crazy not to give it a try.

Factors in the calculation

  • Cost savings (Confluence offers savings between X and Y thousands in software license costs compared to SharePoint, e.g.)
  • Higher productivity due to fewer searches (X minutes per week per employee)
  • Avoidance of redundancies (X minutes per employee per month)
  • More satisfaction through better information (X fewer sick days in Y years)
  • Better meetings — fewer, shorter, with minutes always accessible (15 minutes per employee per week → 300MA * 15/60/40 * 3000 * 12Mon = US$ 67.5 K)
  • Fewer emails (X minutes per week per employee)
  • Documentation of corporate knowledge prevents loss of assets in the event of loss of the employee (replacement, retirement, death)  X annual salaries in Y years
  • Security prevents total loss
  • Transparency prevents corruption

Example with 300 employees

  • Cost savings (Confluence saves US$ 8-30 k in software license costs versus SharePoint)
  • Higher productivity due to fewer searches (15 minutes per week per employee  300MA * 15/60/40 * 3000 * 12Mon = US$ 67,500)
  • Avoidance of redundancies (30 minutes per employee per month  300MA * 30/60/40/4 * 3000 * 12Mon = US$ 33,750)
  • More satisfaction through better information (1 fewer sick day in 2 years  300MA * 1/30 *3000 *12Mon / 2 = US$ 72K)
  • Better meetings — fewer, shorter, with minutes always accessible (15 minutes per employee per week  300MA * 15/60/40 * 3000 * 12Mon = US$ 67,500)
  • Fewer emails (15 minutes per week per employee  300MA * 15/60/40 * 3000 * 12Mon = US$ 67,500)
  • Documentation of corporate knowledge prevents loss of assets in the event of loss of the employee (replacement, retirement, death)  One annual salary in 10 years: US$ 3600
  • Security prevents total loss  not quantifiable but also invaluable
  • Transparency prevents corruption  not quantifiable but also invaluable (not related to trust)

 Imputed total = US$ 350,000
(If this seems too high, the package can perform deductions for existing solutions, e.g. existing wiki or another collaboration solution.)
